Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (commonly abbreviated LoD) is an expansion pack for the popular hack and slash Action role-playing game Diablo II. Unlike the original Diablo's expansion pack, Diablo: Hellfire, it is an official expansion designed by Blizzard North.

More than a standard expansion, Lord of Destruction not only added content in the form of new character classes and an additional scenario, it also dramatically revamped the gameplay of the existing Diablo II for solo and especially multiplayer. As a result, LoD is largely considered a "must-buy" instead of only being an addition, making it a huge multiplayer success and one of the most successful expansion packs of all time.

Features

Lord of Destruction adds a number of new features to the core gameplay of Diablo II. These include:

* A fifth act taking place in and around Mount Arreat in the northern Barbarian Highlands, with an additional act boss, Baal.
* Ethereal items: These items do not fully exist in the mortal plane and appear translucent to the human eye. Because of this, they cannot be repaired and will eventually "deteriorate", so they cannot be used anymore, but they also have better characteristics and lower requirements than their repairable equivalents. However, some magical ethereal items are self-repairing, and some have sockets, and can be made indestructible by inserting a Zod rune.
* Runes: stones that give powerful attributes to a socketed item when placed in it or even more powerful bonuses when placed in a certain order forming a "runeword" (see Rune Words section below for more information).
* Jewels: items serving a similar purpose to gems in that they can be placed in socketed items, but which have random characteristics as opposed to the set characteristics of gems and runes.
* Charms: items giving boosts to character's stats when kept in the inventory of the player.
* Two new character classes: the Assassin and the Druid.
* An expanded private stash for storing items (double the size of the Diablo II stash).
* An alternate mainhand/offhand setup that can be switched between via a hotkey in gameplay.
* Hirelings (mercenaries) as well as summons can now follow the player outside of the Act in which they were hired. They can also be equipped with armor, a helm, and a hireling-specific weapon (as well as a shield in one case). Hirelings also gain experience and can be resurrected (for a price proportional to their level) when killed.
* Class-specific items: new items that only a specific character class can use. These items often contain class-specific bonuses, often adding additional skill points for that character class.
* Elite items: more powerful versions of items following the Normal and Exceptional items.
* New unique items, including many Exceptional and Elite Uniques.
* New set items, including sets that use Class-specific items (ie. only one character class can complete certain sets).
* The game can now be played at 800x600 resolution, up from the standard 640x480.

This version added "cheap" assault rifles such as the Galil and FAMAS; they were less expensive than the M4 and AK-47rifles.
The Counter-Terrorists had the option of giving up their main weapon to purchase a tactical shield. This item was often banned by servers, since a CT with the shield in crouch position is impervious to firepower, and certain mods would allow players to use an assault rifle or submachine gun with the shield. AWP delay was also added.

The X-Files: The Game (ISO)

Your alter ego, FBI Field Agent Craig Willmore. The story will be familiar ground for X-Files fans. While hunting for the missing Feds, Willmore uncovers some shady dealings that he thinks are shady dealings of the everyday, humans-breaking-the-law sort. But fans will already know the big surprise that awaits him: It's really about aliens and government conspiracies. Willmore doesn't figure this out until very late in the game, and we spend much of the early portion learning his personal history and watching two subplots unfold, including one involving a female police detective and some romantic tension. This game came from my personal collection and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when I bought this.

Ghost in the Sheet (ISO) (2007)

Called a "dark afterlife comedy", Ghost in the Sheet casts players in the role of a ghost who's wrapped in a dirty old sheet and sent out on his first mission to discover why a haunted factory called "Sector Omega" was forced to stop operations. Being a specter, your talents are paranormal rather than physical, and in order to discover the factory's hidden secrets, you'll need to develop your supernatural skills. The point-and-click adventure will start players off with a basic "Telekinesis" ability, but more will be introduced as you progress, including obsure skills like "Scary Sound".

Along with its unique premise, Ghost in the Sheet promises to feature high resolution graphics, largely non-linear gameplay that lets you freely explore and solve puzzles in different order, comic-style cutscenes, and various minigames. For those concerned about the latter, CBE offers the assurance that there is no dying (what with being dead already) or timed sequences in the game.

Emperor: Battle For Dune

Emperor returns gamers to Dune, land of sand, home of the spice and the first real-time strategy title. This all-new game presents the Dune universe in full 3-D. As in the classic Dune 2, players can command three unique political houses: noble Attreides, evil Harkonnen, and insidious Ordos. Five powerful subgroups add to the volatile political climate. There are four game worlds to battle on, and players can choose large-scale strategic advances or ground-level tactics. Gamers can wage war online both head-to-head and cooperatively.

Few science fiction licenses have a richer backstory than Frank Herbert's Dune, and few computer games were as influential as Westwood Studios' Dune II way back in the early '90s. Dune II was the very first real-time strategy game and created a new genre now stocked with such hits as StarCraft and Command & Conquer. Westwood returns to Dune to innovate again with its first fully 3-D strategy game, Emperor: Battle for Dune.
Emperor's battles will rage over three different planets until the final battles on Arrakis, otherwise known as Dune. The three factions from the original game return: the sinister Ordos, the evil Harkonnen, and the noble Atreides. New to the game are five minor factions that can be manipulated into the battle through clever play and tactics. There's talk of a cooperative multiplayer game as well, which would be a real-time strategy first. Westwood is looking to reinvent the RTS genre with the very game license that invented it in the first place.

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (2007) [en/pc]

Entertainment today announced that Geometry Wars: Galaxies, a follow up to the frantic 2D game is coming for the Nintendo Wii and DS. Both the Wii version and the DS version will take advantage of the unique control schemes of each device. There will also be bonus unlockable content when you link up your Wii and DS via Wi-Fi.

In addition to a variety of new levels, the game will include a full remake of the Xbox 360 classic. The new game will also feature battle and co-op multiplayer modes, which I can’t wait to check out.

While the original series was developed by Bizarre Creations, the port is being developed by KUJU Entertainment, who’s also working on the highly anticipated PSP 2D/3D platformer, Crush. Geometry Wars: Galaxies should be available for both Nintendo systems sometime this fall.

Sniper Elite

It might be difficult to get excited about yet another World War II shooter on the PC, especially since there are already a bunch of great, similarly themed shooters already available.

Call of Duty 2, Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood, and Day of Defeat all came out within the last few months, they’re all great, and they’re all about World War II. Despite its bad timing, worn-out source material, and lack of exposure, Namco and Rebellion’s recent stab at the genre still does a lot to distinguish itself as a competent and thoughtfully designed shooter. Sniper Elite takes a different approach to the concept of storming beaches and mowing down Nazis. As the title implies, this is a game about being a sniper, and it requires a more methodical approach than simply popping a hot one in anyone wearing the wrong color uniform. That said, Sniper Elite does require a lot of patience, but dedicated marksmen will get a lot of satisfaction from the lengthy and challenging campaign.
